Travel Tips
Accomodations
When booking accommodations, there are many factors which we consider, these include:
Free WiFi (most important), how close it is to the nearest train /bus network, how far the sight seeing locations from the accommodation.
-
Hostels - 80% of the time, we use this. Hostelworld is the go to website for bookings.
-
Airbnb - if you don't know what this is, its basically a rented apartment, personally we've never used Airbnb, but think its a good option if you're going in a larger group, also you get a kitchen which reduces food cost ( if you know how to cook that is)
-
Hotels - we would use hotels as mainly our last resort when considering the cost and if we were going on holiday with our family. Trivago is a great comparision site to use.
Saving money whilst aboard
-
Food and Drinks - supermarkets for food and water and cook meals
-
Travel - day pass train/bus - depends how far the places are
-
Free Walking Tour -this is one we really like when visiting different countries, it offers a locals view of the city and its free, so no complaining.
Transport
When booking flights/transport consider:
-
Being flexible with dates and time -flights can be cheaper around certain parts of the year and also mid-week too.
-
Booking time - best time is to book is probably no later than 2/3 months before the trip
-
Alternative transport - Taking the train(inter-railing) or even coach within Europe works out so much cheaper-FlixBus,depends if you like long journeys
-
Browser -Skyscanner would be our favourite when searching, make sure you also search on incognito browser, as the website tracks what you search and increases the price.

Stuff to sort out before going aboard
-
Check in online - it will save time
-
Booking airport transfers - local taxis at airport charge a lot, so planning this ahead will save you money
-
Planning - places to visit, and pre-booking stuff from home before going, tripadvisor is good site
-
Travel insurance, visa & vaccinations - general stuff to sort out, make sure these are done well in advance
-
Travel currency exchange - we both use a travel debit card as it's a safer option and most countries accept card payments, but take some money out from an ATM for uses where cash is accepted only, Revolut - it has good exchange rate and no fees when using aboard
-
Phone SIM - we both use 'Three' SIM as you can call and use data abroad at no extra cost from your plan in most countries
-
Take student card - Don't forget your student card: There are loads of museums, and other tourist attractions.
There are other stuff to consider, but haven't really listed everything here, like stuff to pack.
